Sony playstation prices tariffs and Sony is raising the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by about $50 starting Thursday. The Japanese company is currently experiencing a slow recovery in the video game market amid the threat of U.S. tariffs.
All three PlayStation 5 consoles will see similar price increases
The most expensive PS5 Pro version is expected to cost $749.99, the company announced in a blog post on Wednesday.
The price changes come after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from global manufacturing hubs like China and Japan. This raised concerns about supply chain disruptions and high material costs.
Sony raised the prices of its consoles in several European markets in April
A month later, rival Xbox also raised retail prices of its consoles and accessories in the United States, Europe, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Consoles were seen as a key growth driver for the video game market this year, thanks to the launch of premium titles like Take-Two Interactive’s “Grand Theft Auto VI” and the Nintendo Switch 2.
However, price hikes on consoles and the postponement of the highly anticipated launch of “GTA VI” until next year have cast doubt on the industry’s growth rate.
On Wednesday, Sony announced that there will be no price changes for other markets and that the prices of PlayStation 5 accessories will remain unchanged.
